According to a study published by the VOD Observatory on July 15,2008, 3.234 films released in theatres were available on the main French VOD platforms (Canal Play, Orange 24/24, TF1 Vision, France Télévisions VOD, Virgin Mega, Arte VOD, Club Internet and Universciné) at the end of May 2008. The offer has therefore rose of 14,6% since January 2008.

The offer is composed of 15% of recent films (released theatrically less than 36 months before), of 23,7% of films that reached one million admissions in theatres in France, and of 46,3% of French films. In addition, if the rate of use has slightly decreased (3,5 paying acts per month in average), the average amount paid by the user has slightly increased. We can probably see there the result of the 2007 year-end promotions, which managed to increase the VOD penetration rate from 70% in December 2007 to 80% in May 2008 (number of users knowing the existence of a VOD service).

According to a study published by the VOD Observatory in France on March 18, 2008, 2.466 films release in theatres were available on the main French VOD platforms at the end of December 2007:
- 1.340 on Canal Play
- 988 on Virgin Mega
- 736 on TF1 Vision
- 676 on Club Internet
- 590 on Orange
- 134 on Arte VOD
- 24 on France Télévisions VOD
Total excluding doubles: 2.466

The presence of a given film on one or more platforms does not vary significantly since June 2007 : 55,6% of the films are available only on one platform, 21,5% on two, and 10,7% on at least four.

In addition, 861 more films (of which 55,9% Americans) were offered on these platforms. They are not accounted for more thoroughly because they have not been (and will not be) released in theatres in France.

Between June 2007 and December 2007, the film offer rose by 29,5%. From November 2006, the rise is of 88,1%. The number of French films has increased faster (37,5%) than that of the American films (21,6%) between June and December 2007.

The offer of recent films (i.e. films released theatrically less than 12 months before) in December 2007 has slightly decreased since June 2007 (5,2% instead of 8,1%). The proportion of French films and American films is relatively stable.

Another statistic has been revealed : the number of films released theatrically and made available in DVD or on VOD. As a matter of fact, from July 1, 2006 until June 30, 2007, 73,7% of films released theatrically were released on the DVD market. This transformation rate was of 70,3% on the preceding period, which means the increase is not meaningful. However, the number of films released in theatres that were offered on VOD for the first time has raised of 40,7% from July 1, 2006 until June 30, 2007, instead of 31,7% during the preceding period. The VOD exploitation becomes more and more frequent for recent films.

The Observatory also published figures of the VOD market in France in 2007. That year, the market represented EUR 29,2 millions, in rise of 50% compared to 2006 (figures include main Internet and IPTV platforms). Interestingly, 85% of the transactions occured on IPTV, 97,6% of paying transactions concerned rentals, and 95,7% of the turnover was made of single-program purchases. The market is therefore clearly dominated by single-program rentals on IPTV.

A statistic on cultural diversity was awaited for with a certain anxiety, since the market tmay tend to concentrate on a few titles in the absence of the equivalent of quotas in the non-linear world. It is quite the case. As a matter of fact, the first 50 films represent 60% of the admissions in theatres, 19% of the DVD sales and 33% of the VOD sales. However, the French films are well exploited and promoted on the French VOD platforms since among the first 50 titles in the VOD sales, 38 are French, 10 are American and 2 are European non French.

According to a study published on October 23, 2007 by the VOD Observatory in France, 1.904 films released in theatres were available on the main French VOD services at the end of June 2007 :

- 1.346 on Canal Play
- 980 on TF1 Vision
- 928 on Virgin Mega
- 502 on Orange
- 321 on Club Internet
- 62 on Arte VOD
- 18 on France Télévisions VOD

In addition, 588 films (of which 53,4% American) were available on these platforms but had not been released in theatres in France.

One must note that certain films are available on several platforms, which explains why the addition of available films gives a result higher than 1.904, which is the total without doubles. As a matter of fact, 58,3% of the films are available on a single platform, whereas 20,8% of the films are available on two platforms an 9,6% are available on at least 4 platforms.

Between November 2006 and June 2007, the film offer has risen of 45%. It is composed of 8,1% of new films (released in theatres in the past 12 months), of 25,9% of films that scored over a million admissions, and of 41,9% of French films. The average amount paid by the user has raised from EUR 2,80 in March/April 2007 to EUR 4,2 in June 2007, which tends to prove that, the VOD becoming more popular, the users converted to the on-demand rentals at home have an increased VOD payment capacity.

The CNC and the ALPA published in October 2007 a study on the Internet-based offer of pirate films in France. This study measures the evolution of the number of illegal film files available on the Internet, depending on their source and on the time it takes to see them available.
