Three months later than originally planned, the e-commerce company Cdiscount lauches today its Free VOD offer, financed by advertisements. The films are downloadable for free and viewable an unlimited number of times during 15 days, after which the file becomes unreadable.

For this launch, 4 titles are offered:
A VERY BRITISH GANGSTER, released in theatres in France on 07/18/2007
SCREAM 3, released in theatres in France on 04/19/2000
RAINING STONES, released in theatres in France on 10/06/1993
LA VERITABLE HISTOIRE DU PETIT CHAPERON ROUGE, released in theatres in France on  01/25/2006.

The number of downloads is actually limited to 30.000, which is an important figure on the rental market, but a poor one on the TV market.

These films are offered during 7 days. Interestingly, the renewal occurs on Wednesdays, traditional opening day in theatres in France.

The first movie is therefore released on AVOD 16 months after its theatrical release, during the window traditionally reserved for Pay TV channels. This choice of chronology is quite surprising, since TV channels are one of the main revenue sources for rightholders, and it is doubtful that any TV channel accepted to buy the movie with a parallel AVOD exploitation.

This offer will certainly feed the media chronology debate in general, and the place of AVOD - Free VOD in particular.

On October 2, Carrefour launched an online VOD offer. The service is operated by the DVD rental and VOD service provider Glowria. It is therefore based on the same model as other Glowria services: the user must first download a player to rent or buy movies on the website. Interestingly, a significative part of the offer is already available on electronic sell through (EST).

Carrefour being one of the largest retail companies in the world, this launch shows how optimistic the VOD market estimates are. However, it is likely that Carrefour's VOD sales will remain very limited as long as the service will not be availble on TVIP or cable TV.

Here is a glossary of non linear services and technical terms associated. These are not statutory definitions.

Two meanings of "VOD" - Video On Demand:

-          The whole variety of non-linear / on-demand services. As opposed to linear services, which broadcast a program at a date and time chosen by the broadcaster, non linear services make programs available to the users, who will screen them at the time and place of their choice

-          On-demand rental, which historically was the first on-demand service to appea.

AVOD - Advertised VOD or Free VOD or Free-On-Demand

Service offering the free screening of a program at the time and place chosen by the user (the cost being supported by advertisers).

Catch-Up TV

Service offering the screening, at a time and place chosen by the user, of a program that was recently broadcast on TV. The service can be free or paying (e.g. to screen a program that was broadcast by a pay TV channel).

DRM - Digital Rights Management

Digital key restricting the use of an electronic file (e.g. forbidding transfers, or limiting the number of screenings or the time during which the program may be watched).

EST - Electronic Sell-Through or DTB/DTO - Download To Burn/Own

Service offering to buy a program at a moment and place chosen by the user, to permanently download and/or burn it on a digital media, and watch it almost immediatel.

IPTV - Internet Protocol TV

Commonly and improperly referring to a TV service broadcast through DSL services. When the VOD is exploited on IPTV, the service is available on a TV connected to a DSL network through a set top box.

Portability

Technology allowing to transfer on a portable device (e.g. iPod, Archos, mobile phone, laptop) a downloaded program. The number of screenings can be limited in time or not, and the number of transfers can be limited or not.

STB - Set Top Box

Electronic box gathering Internet access and/or phone and/or TV services, generally using the DSL technology.

Streaming

Technology allowing to screen a program at the moment chosen by the user, without the program actually being downloaded on the user-hardware (computer or TV).

SVOD - Subscription VOD

Service offering to screen at the moment and place chosen by the user a given number of programs for a specific amount of time against a lump sum.

Temporary Download

Technology allowing to download a program, at the moment chosen by the user, which the user will only be able to screen a certain number of times and during a certain period of time.

The producer, sales agent and distributor Wild Bunch announced the launching of a SVOD service on October 13 in France: FilmoTV. The company will be headed by Bruno Delecour, former president of CanalSatellite.

This service seems innovative compared to the main cinema SVOD offer now existing in France, that of the ISP Free. Indeed, the highlight is not on the number of films. "Only" 50 films will be offered every month, with a 50% renewal every month. It means that every given film will be offered for two months. The emphasize is clearly put on the editorialisation:

- video presentation of the films by authors or journalists, to encourage the user to watch a given film or other ones that are linked to it,
- making-ofs, best scenes excerpts,
- user-generated-content allowed with forums and comments,
- sorting by genre, filmmaker, actor or country.

The service will be sold at EUR 9.99 per month (with a minimum of three months commitment). As a first step, it will be available on the Internet as well as on TVs of the Numericâble subscribers. This service will offer only catalogue movies, to avoid competing with pay television channels.

In addition, the FilmoTV platform will propose a VOD rental service for recent films as well as catalogue.
